*Sinopia or Sinople, (from Greek Σινωπίς "of Sinope") is a dark reddish earth pigment, whose color comes from hematite, or dehydrated iron oxide. It was produced during classical antiquity at a Greek colony on The Black Sea, where the modern Turkish city of Sinop is located.
